Lib Dems make renewed plea to end the pay cap for emergency services

In recent disasters, the emergency services have been praised by the government for their excellent and fearless response to terrorist attacks and fires. Tim Farron is calling on the government to scrap the pay cap in recognition of their excellent work.

The pay cap, which has been in place since 2012, limits pay rises for public sector workers to 1% a year until 2020.

Farron says they deserve “so much better” for their tireless work. Lib Dems and the Labour party pledged to scrap the pay cap in their manifestos, but there were no such promises from the Conservative party.

[The Lib Dems] says the cap means that emergency service staff are seeing their wages cut in real terms, with the average firefighter set to be an estimated £1,423 a year worse off, in real terms, by 2020-21.

A Treasury spokesperson said the party’s current policy is protect public sector jobs, and did not respond to the call for an end to the pay cap.
